Following my car accident last year, a dear friend loaned us his automobile - a BMW - while we searched for a new car. There was much to love about this fabulous machine: seat warmers, steering wheel warmers, wipers that sensed when rain fell on the windshield. But all of these perks paled in comparison to the Sirius satellite radio; I became addicted to Seth Rudetsky's Broadway's Best show (channel 77).There's nothing like driving a finely engineered German car while belting out your favorite show tunes. I was a driving diva, singing to my heart's content in my climate-controlled bubble. During a long drive home from Chattanooga, we listened to Seth interview Beth Leavel, then starring in The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway. She was nominated for a Tony for her role as the Chaperone, and Seth was absolutely convinced that she would win. She did.
It was on channel 77 that I first heard the music from The Drowsy Chaperone - it was funny, charming and singable; I couldn't wait to see the show, but wondered if I would ever have the opportunity.
As it turned out, Dallas Summer Musicals was presenting the touring company at the same time we'd be in town for General Assembly! Tickets were expensive but I didn't care.
It was the funniest musical I've ever seen. Great cast, great production, great everything. I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard for so long. If you get the opportunity, see the show - it's what a perfect musical should be.
I'll close with the lyrics from Bride's Lament. Here the young starlet, having given up her fabulous career for love, decides to cancel her wedding. It's absolutely, horribly hilarious and I laughed so hard my face hurt.
I put a monkey on a pedestal
And tried to make that monkey stay
And he did for a time
But he needed to climb
And with other monkeys play
Far away
He left his jacket on the pedestal
Beside his tiny rusty cup
And I haven’t got the strength
To pick them up
Oh monkey, monkey, monkey
You broke my heart in two
But I’ll always save that pedestal
For you
Come my little monkey
Come my little monkey, do

I saw The Drowsy Chaperone at Christmas. With Bob Saget and Cindy Williams. It ended up being the last day on Broadway.
You are right. Great show. Lots of fun. :-)
Not much chance I'll see that HERE, but I absolutely love that there are some new musicals worth seeing. And singing along with! Yea!!
(my word verification: atawabaq
Sounds like a town on the eastern shore!!)
It CLOSED?
~sigh~
I miss good Broadway. Oddly enough, the last show I saw and really enjoyed was RENT.
Hoping this one is still touring - in an area I can reach. Ya gotta love a good monkey analogy in verse.
Gonna hafta look into satellite radio, too!
Marianna,
Atawabaq is nothing compared to Pungoteague - remember that one?
Karen,
Go see the musical - who cares where it's playing? Like you couldn't organize a trip around it?
Oh, yeah...I remember. Special treatment for that one!
